Immigrants and rental housing

Immigrants and rental housing

According to Statistics Canada (National Household Survey), immigrants in Montreal are renting at more than 61% of their total number and more than 45,000 immigrants have arrived this year.

The immigrant clientele is therefore a clientele that occupies a large part of the rental units, and they remain for several years in this kind of housing.

Since March 2009, the Association of Quebec Landlords (APQ) has signed a partnership agreement with ROMEL (Coalition of Organizations for Montreal Ethnic Housing), representing the tenants, mostly newcomers.

This partnership, in addition to being a first in Quebec, is mainly concerned about harmonizing relations between owners and newcomers to Montreal by promoting the integration of the latter, beginning with access to housing.

ROMEL offers training services on various subjects: finding a housing, the lease and insurance, social housing ... besides keeping an updated record of available housing for these newcomers. These units are inspected and ROMEL also helps tenant households to find adequate housing.

In addition, it has translators (French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Laotian, Creole, Ukrainian, Farsi, Portuguese, Lingala, Kikongo) who can help you in the rental process and in the relationship with your tenant.

Homeowners who have dwellings for rent and who want to take advantage of this agreement can communicate with 1-888-382-9670, extension 247. This program is open to all owners of rental property.

The APQ reminds you that these days you must ensure yourself whether the tenant who visits the dwelling is able to meet his obligations, financial as well those related to the tranquility of the other occupants of the building.
