The Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) notices that, since a few years, more and more fires are caused by people who throw their extinguished cigarette buts in the window boxes and on the flower beds bordering commercial and residential buildings.

« In order to avoid such incidents, the SIM recommends not to extinguish any cigarettes in/on these because certain organic garden products present there are inflammable. Make sure you have completely extinguished your cigarette buts before leaving the site where you are », one mentions by way of a communiqué.

The SIM invites smokers to rather use the mural ash treys added in the periphery of the buildings or, still, the makeshift ash treys that are filled with sand which also help diminishing risks of fire.

Finally, one wants to signal: « When raking your terrain and doing your spring cleaning, you may perhaps have accumulated grass, wood or waste debris. Do not forget that on the territory of the agglomeration of Montreal, it is forbidden to light open air fires. Think about composting or about shredding as alternative measures. Get information at the office of your borough or of your municipality concerning the options available to you to eliminate this type of waste ».
