Thinking about buying an electric car?

Thinking about buying an electric car?

Make sure you have all the required information. Among others, have you thought of installing a private terminal to charge your electric vehicle?

Indeed, besides the use of public electrical terminals at several power distributors you can ask to install an electrical terminal at your expense.

However, do not forget that the installation in a common area or in one belonging to your landlord must be approved by the latter.

Curbside of the road

In addition to the general requirements for public terminals (section 4.3 of this Guide), you must consider the following items when planning to install a charging station at the curbside of the road:

• availability of a power supply with the required voltage;
• installation and connection of the equipment and, where appropriate, a distribution panel with the

   required voltage;
• excavation works affecting the street or the sidewalk;
• installation of protection to guard the terminal against possible shocks caused by private or service

   vehicles;
• the need for the contractor to have the required licenses (for example, if the terminal is anchored to a

   building or civil engineering works, the contractor must be licensed for subcategory 11.2, “Contractor

   in equipment and special products”;
• municipal regulations in force.

Parking of the co-ownership or apartment building

The installation of a charging station terminal in the parking lot of a co-ownership building or rental property requires that one takes account of several factors related to the location of the terminal as well as to the parking property and the network connection equipment. Generally, one uses 30 A J1772 terminals of 208/240 V.

In the case of a condominium where the parking space is located in the privative portion (a townhouse, for instance), the power supply of the charging station terminal is often linked to the counter of the occupant, making the installation similar to the one that one installs in an individual house.

In the garage of a condominium where the owner has his own parking space the latter must agree with the Syndicate as to a suitable location for the installation of the charging station terminal.

The power of the terminal can come from the counter of the co-owner or from the shared one serving the common portions of the property. In both cases, the connection is made in the same way as an engine-heating or lighting plug in a parking lot or a storage area in the basement.

Attention! The Code provides that under certain conditions closed parking lots are considered hazardous locations.
