Tips on Reducing Your Gas Consumption

Tips on Reducing Your Gas Consumption

Soaring oil prices and environmental concerns are making more and more drivers want to reduce their gas consumption. But how?

Here are a few tips from the auto insurance specialists at The Personal General Insurance Inc., l’Association des propriétaires du Québec’s group insurer. As you will see, the solution lies in many simple gestures that together can have a big effect on your wallet.

Slow down a bit. Simply obeying the speed limit can bring down your gas consumption. What’s more, a vehicle that consumes less generates fewer greenhouse gases.

Impact on your Insurance Premiums

You’ll benefit from some of these tips not only at the pump but also when paying for your auto insurance. Bringing down your mileage can help you reduce your premiums. Cars with small engines not only consume less energy, they also cost less to insure.

Reduce your mileage. Get into the habit of doing your errands on foot or by bike if you can. Carpool or use public transit. Plan your outings carefully so you can take care of a number of errands at once. If you travel a great deal, buy a GPS to avoid needless detours.

Lighten up. Don’t keep an unnecessary load in your car. This also applies to your rooftop luggage carrier or bike rack: remove them if they’re not needed because the wind resistance makes your car use more gas.

Keep your car in good running condition. A badly maintained engine can substantially increase your gas consumption. Pay special attention to your tires: low tire pressure increases gas consumption.

Choose your next car wisely: Make energy efficiency one of your key selection criteria.
