Understanding Home Insurance

When the time comes to take out home insurance, it’s often difficult to tell what’s essential and what’s not. Follow these four simple tips to ensure your home is properly insured.

Tip 1: Inventory your property

Prepare a written inventory of your possessions, photograph them, and keep this information in a safe place.

If you own valuable property, inform your agent. Also be sure to mention any special features of your home—a solarium, for example—because your policy covers not only the contents, but also the dwelling itself!

Tip 2: Consider specific coverage

Protect your jewelry, furs, fine art, etc. with specific coverage available with your home insurance policy from The Personal. Valuable property is covered by the home insurance policy, but is usually subject to coverage limitations. With specific coverage, you are guaranteed truly satisfactory compensation.

Tip 3: Opt for replacement value

Replacement value allows you, under certain conditions, to be compensated based on the full replacement cost of your property rather than its depreciated value.

Tip 4: Don’t forget public liability

Be sure to include sufficient coverage for public liability in your policy. When unfortunate events—such as a fire, for example—occur, a policy with suitable coverage could prevent you from being left in the lurch.

Remember to update your coverage

Renovating? Buying valuable property? Becoming self-employed or starting to work at home? Don’t wait—update your coverage right away!
