A great number of Quebecers involved in renovating their property

The Renovex Index published quarterly by The Quebec Building Materials Retailers Association (ADMACQ) indicates that the home improvement market is very active in Quebec. As a matter of fact, 20% of the Quebec households have renovated their bathroom this year, this represents a 5% increase over last year, while 16% have rejuvenated their kitchen. This proportion remains the same as in 2005. On the other hand, interior decorating experienced an important increase with 54% of the households having performed this type of work in 2006 compared to 46% last year.

For Donald O'Hara, President and General Manager of ADMACQ, these relatively high percentages are explained mainly by the aging of our housing stock. "Kitchen and bathroom renovations represent major work that fairly disturb family life, and consequently they are undertaken mostly when necessary. It is a good indication of the aging of the Quebec housing stock, and a trend that should continue for another few years."

Increasing expenses

On another note, still based on the Renovex survey responses, 62% of the Quebec households intend to buy just as much or even more from hardware stores or renovation centers in 2006 in comparison to 2005. Let's note that each household spent an average of $1,655 in hardware stores or renovation centers in 2005.
