Married spouse: completely protected in case of death?

We often focus on the risks in the event of death without a will, of a spouse who is not married or living in civil union. Remember, common law spouses, regardless of the duration of their union, or even if you have children together, are not successors (potential heirs) under the law. So, in case of death without a will, a common law spouse does not inherit from his/her deceased partner.
