One Additional Step towards a Greener City

One Additional Step towards a Greener City

The City of Quebec is delighted by the granting of subsidies announced by the federal and provincial Government which will allow it to move forward with its project of valorization of organic matter.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, president of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister for the Francophonie and Minister responsible for the region of Quebec City, and by Mme Line Beauchamp, Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment and the Parks, and by Mr. Sam Hamad, Minister for Employment and Social Solidarity, Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for the region of the National-Capital of Quebec.

“This announcement will enable us to move ahead with our project of recovering organic matter and of decreasing incinerated waste, said Mr. Régis Labeaume, mayor of Quebec City. Quebec City wants to become the most attractive city in the country and that corresponds with our objective to be a greener city. ”

With this project, the City of Quebec wants to achieve the governmental goals laid down in the most recent Quebec policy of residual matter management. It wishes, as a matter of fact, to reduce the quantity of greenhouse gases emitted and to reduce the organic matter eliminated in the incinerator.

Total investment

The Quebec City project of biomethanisation and the construction of a composting centre will benefit from an aid of 16,5 million $ from the federal government and of 17,7 million $ from the provincial government. The total project, already registered in the triennial Programme of immobilization of the City 2010-2011-2012, is evaluated at 57 million $.
