Repossession requests have decreased at the Régie du logement

Using figures and data from the Régie du logement’s 2005-2006 Annual Report, requests to repossession requests of rental units by landlords have decreased, contrary to what tenant organizations have been claiming.

During this period, landlords asked the Régie to rule on 1,653 repossessions compared to1, 942 in 2004-2005, and 2,199 in 2003-2004.

Cases submitted by landlords for damages and interest have increased from 847 in 2003-2004; 801 in 2004-2005; and 893 in 2005-2006.

There has been a slight increase in cases submitted by landlords for non-payment of rent. In this regard, there were 44,742 cases in 2004-2005 and 44,942 for the last fiscal year.

Rent-setting requests submitted by landlords have also decreased, and went from 14,472 in 2004-2005 to 10,135 during 2005-2006. Tenants requested rent-setting (also a slight decrease) at the Régie for 576 cases in 2004-2005, which now are at 436 for the Régie’s last fiscal year.

The total number of hearings held at the Régie du logement for 2005-2006 were 79,179, an increase over the previous two years at 78,833 in 2004-2005 and 77,153 in 2003-2004.
